Implants
A dental implant is a titanium component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture. The basis for modern dental implants is a process called osseointegration, in which materials such as titanium form an intimate bond to bone.
A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge or denture) is attached to the implant or an abutment is placed which will hold a dental prosthetic/crown.

Procedure
Following an in-depth assessment, the implant is placed with bone augmentation if required.
Most often there is then a 3 month wait for the bone to integrate in to the implant at this point the implant is buried under the gum and a temporary denture or bridge is provided.
After three months the implant is exposed and an abutment is placed within the implant for the bridge, crown or denture to fit in. An impression is taken of this and a temporary bridge, crown or denture placed over the implant. 2 weeks later the crown/bridge/denture can be fitted.
